2016 Queensland Derby Field and Barrier Draw

June 8th, 2016

A talented and capacity field of eighteen three-year-olds and one emergency has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s standout performers.

Howard Be Thy Name has returned to racing in exceptional form this time and could very well receive the run of the race in the Queensland Derby after drawing the ideal barrier 2.

Making a competitive transition to black type racing when second in the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) on February 5th, Howard Be Thy Name returned to the mainland and winning form in the Racing.com BM70 (1600m) at Pakenham on March 31st.

Repeating the dose in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) on April 16th, the Redoute’s Choice gelding charged home to win the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) a fortnight later, before breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on May 14th.

Having run on for a credible third in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben a fortnight ago, Howard Be Thy Name will relish a step up to a mile and a half in the Queensland Oaks and will be suited to the Eagle Farm conditions this weekend.

Mackintosh is yet to taste anything but success since arriving in Brisbane and will undoubtedly face his biggest career test to date in the Queensland Derby, but is also drawn well in barrier 5.

Beginning his career in New Zealand under the guidance of James Bridge, Mackintosh failed to make anything of an impact in his Australian debut when 12th of thirteen runners in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 5th.

Transferred to the care of Chris Waller, the Pins gelding delivered a classy field defeat in the Fishboy Seafoods BM77 (1500m) on April 30th, before arriving in Brisbane for success in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) on May 14th.

Having repeated the dose in the Grand Prix Stakes a fortnight ago, Mackintosh will be partnered by regular and in-form hoop Blake Shinn once more in the Queensland Derby.

Trainer Chris Waller has been confirmed to launch a four-pronged attack on the three-year-old feature after also including Encosta Line (barrier 8), Rodrico (barrier 13) and Multifacets (barrier 9) in the 2016 Queensland Derby field.

Etymology charged home for second in the SA Derby most recently, and should find a good position in the Queensland Derby off pace from the wide barrier 19, particularly with James McDonald in the saddle.

Capping an impressive 2015 campaign with a well-fought second to Tarzino in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m), Etymology required a couple of runs and a step up in distance to find form upon resuming this time; running on for a credible sixth in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) third-up on March 19th.

Progressing to fifth in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m), the New Approach colt ran a close second in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m), in what was his only other start prior to the SA Derby.

Godolphin will also be offered more than one chance of success after trainer John O’Shea confirmed Eschiele in the Queensland Derby field, who will be partnered by Damian Browne from barrier 3.
