Trainer Chris Waller will begin his assault on the Brisbane Winter Carnival on Saturday when he saddles 2016 Queensland Derby prospects Mackintosh, Multifacets and Trafalgar in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben.
Mackintosh began his racing career under the guidance of James Bridge in New Zealand, and has posted a credible three wins through only five career starts, including the Fishboy Seafoods BM77 (1500m) in his first appearance for Waller at Hawkesbury a fortnight ago.
Multifacets has continued to improve over increasing distances through his eleven start career so far and undoubtedly produced his best performance to date when third in the talent-rich Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) on March 26th.
Trafalgar is arguably the most exciting of Waller’s three prospects this weekend and with a view towards the 2016 Queensland Derby, despite a lacklustre run in the Fishboy Seafoods BM77 last time out.
Waller is pleased with the condition of all three runners leading into the Rough Habit Plate, and believes they have all earned a shot at the 2016 Queensland Derby.
“They are all on trial for the Queensland Derby,” Waller told AAP.
“I didn’t know much about Mackintosh before Hawkesbury but he deserves his chance.
“If you had asked me a year ago if I thought Winx would do what she has done I would have said no, so who knows.”
Trafalgar debuted to racing with a strong performance for success in the Kevin Brown Plate (1500m) at Kembla Grange on December 12th; progressing to second in the McNally Jones Staff BM66 (1800m) before taking out the Cellarbrations BM66 (1900m); the longest race he has contested to date.
Waller’s three runners were including amongst a list of seven nominations on Monday, and are expected to be confirmed in a capacity 2016 Rough Habit Plate field of seventeen following a barrier draw on Wednesday.
