Chris Waller has a big opinion of Trafalgar and has revealed he will set the talented three-year-old on a course towards the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) during the upcoming 2016 Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Trafalgar has fast stamped himself as one to follow through a short but impressive racing career so far; posting three wins and a further two minors through only five competitive appearances.
Trafalgar is poised to take his place amongst open company in Saturday’s Fishboy Seafoods BM77 (1500m) at Hawkesbury, and Waller is confident the horse will lay a great account for himself in the race ahead of his trip north for the 2016 Queensland Derby.
“At this stage he’s our main Derby hope for Queensland,” Waller told Racing Ahead.
“He was very impressive winning first-up, he came from last and it was a really good win, an eye-catcher to say the least.
“He looks well placed tomorrow. He’s racing against the older horses but at this time of year I don’t see how that’s a disadvantage and he should be able to settle a bit closer from gate 1.
“He’s probably our best chance of the day.”
Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Trafalgar immediately announced himself to the Australian racing community when delivering a notable field a near-three length defeat in the Kevin Brown Maiden Plate (1500m) on December 12th.
Progressing to second in the McNally Jones Staff BM66 (1800m) on New Year’s Day, the Hinchinbrook gelding returned to winning form in the Cellarbrations BM66 (1900m) less-than a fortnight later.
Returning to the paddock after placing third in the McGrath Estate Agents BM71 (1800m) on Australia Day, Trafalgar resumed this time with a scintillating performance for success in the Bowermans Furniture BM78 (1300m) at Warwick Farm on April 13th.
