2015 Queensland Derby Final Field and Barrier Draw

June 3rd, 2015

A talented and capacity field of 16 plus three emergencies has been confirmed for Saturday’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben Racecourse, highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s leading three-year-olds.

Werther returned to the winner’s circle with an impressive effort amongst open company in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) last weekend and will leave from the rails draw in the 2015 Queensland Derby.

Posting four wins and a further five minors over 12 career starts so far, Werther was a standout performer over major three-year-old events in his native New Zealand; running second in the Group 3 Manawatu Classic (2000m) and winning the Group 2 Championship Stakes (2100m) most notably.

Crossing the ditch for a close second in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) in his only other start prior to the Eagle Farm Cup, Werther will be partnered by last start hoop Jim Byrne.

Trainer Peter Moody is set to be offered two good chances of success in the 2015 Queensland Derby after confirming Upham (barrier 12) and Inauguration (barrier 3) in the final field.

One of the strongest and most consistent three-year-olds through the 2015 Winter Carnival so far, Upham ran second in each of the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) and Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m); returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2020m) at Doomben a fortnight ago.

Inauguration has been luckless in his two most recent runs but is sure to be boosted by Hugh Bowman and a good draw in the Queensland Derby.

Booking his ticket north when third in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) first-up on April 6th, the Authorized gelding failed to make much of an impact in the Gunsynd Classic and was blocked late when fifth in the Rough Habit Plate.

Forced to run wide in the Grand Prix Stakes, Barrier 3 offers a far-greater opportunity to find ideal early running position in the Queensland Derby.

Interstate raiders High Midnight (barrier 7), Sadler’s Lake (barrier 18) and Magicool (barrier 17) have each found great condition leading into the 2015 Queensland Derby and figure as realistic chances of success.

A rising star for Bart and James Cummings, High Midnight is aiming for a third consecutive win in the 2015 Queensland Derby and is sure to stay the distance.

Posting three wins and a minor over seven career starts so far, Sadler’s Lake won the Rough Habit Plate before boxing on for fifth in the Grand Prix Stakes.

Running a credible fourth in the SA Derby, Magicool posted a comfortable win in the Banjo Paterson Series Heat (2000m) last time out on May 23rd and appears primed for success.
