2014 Queensland Derby Betting Update

June 5th, 2014

A capacity field of 18 plus two emergencies has been confirmed for this weekend’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse, offering punters exceptional value from a betting point of view and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.

Having received the greatest share of wagers since final betting markets for the 2014 Queensland Derby first opened on Wednesday; Pinstripe Lane has been cut in from an opening quote of nearly $7 to currently feature as outright $4.40 favourite and clear market mover.

Returning to the track in good form this season, Pinstripe Lane was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight of the Telstra Business Centre Handicap (1600m) first-up on March 22nd, but has since displayed exceptional talent in finishing fourth in the Mancave Sheds Handicap (1717m), first in the Rexel 3.y.o (1900m) and second in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) last time out.

Allocated the central barrier 9, the Pins colt has been confirmed to be partnered by champion jockey Damien Oliver and is more than worth a bet at current odds.

Strolling home to win the Grand Prix Stakes last time out, Vilanova is yet to receive much more than a sprinkling of bets for success in the 2014 Queensland Derby, but is still featured on the second line of betting with Elusive Runner at a quote of $4.50.

Claiming an unwanted tag as one of the more inconsistent runners currently in work, Vilanova finished third in the Dunkirk 3.y.o+ (1600m) on April 25th, and was unable to justify resounding favouritism in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) prior to the Grand Prix Stakes.

Charged with overcoming the relatively wide and awkward barrier 15 in the Queensland Derby, Vilanova’s chances for success were raised earlier this week when leading jockey Nash Rawiller was confirmed to maintain the ride this weekend.

Finishing outside the places just once in five competitive race starts to date, Elusive Runner will without doubt face his biggest test to date in the 2014 Queensland Derby, but has more than earned his place in the final field.

Strolling home to beat a talented field to the line in the Hibernian Hotel Plate (1600m) on April 18th, the Encosta De Lago gelding finished second to Pinstripe Lane in the Rexel 3.y.o before once again finishing just off the pace when second in the Sportsyear 3.y.o (2000m) last time out.

Allocated the ideal inside barrier, Elusive Runner is more than worth a wager for success in the 2014 Queensland Derby, especially after being confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Tommy Berry.

Currently offered at generous $12 odds for success, talented kiwi raider Telepathic arguably offers punters the best value for money of any runner included in the final field of the 2014 Queensland Derby.

A noted performer in major events in her native New Zealand since first appearing on track in the spring of 2013, the Mossman filly won both the Lindaur 3.y.o Open (1200m) and Governor General’s Cup (1600m) prior to crossing the ditch, since which she has finished second in the Rough Habit Plate and fifth in the Grand Prix Stakes.
