2011 Queensland Derby Form Guide

June 9th, 2011

The 2011 Queensland Derby is going to be an absolute beauty and looking through the form guide there’s a host of contenders.

The one they’re all trying to get though is undoubtedly Shootoof which has shown the form against the open grade horses already.

Having said that nothing is guaranteed in an 18 horse race and if he finds trouble or luck doesn’t go his way he could be out of it without ever firing a shot.

The only thing that looks for certain is that there will be a heap of early speed especially from horses in wide gates looking to push across to the rails.

While it may look like a betting nightmare the value certainly makes the Queensland Derby a very exciting prospect.

#1 – Shadows In The Sun (Barrier – 9) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Tim Clark
  • Career Stats: 19s – 3w – 3p
  • Last Start: 8th at Doomben

Winner of the SA Derby and mixed it in the open grade in the Doomben Cup last start. Will look to take the lead and will certainly take some catching.

#2 – Shootoff (Barrier – 12) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Graeme Rogerson
  • Jockey: Michael Rodd
  • Career Stats: 16s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 4th at Doomben

The race favourite and deservedly so after running with the big boys in the Doomben Cup. Easily won two in a row before that run and looks incredibly hard to beat.

#3 – Turnitup (Barrier – 11) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Peter Moody
  • Jockey: Luke Nolen
  • Career Stats: 13s – 3w – 7p
  • Last Start: 1st at Doomben

Had one of the races of the carnival with Mr Light Blue last start in the Grand Prix Stakes and won the race on the line. Excellent performances in 2011, he’ll take some beating.

Bet on Turnitup now at Luxbet

#4 – Yulalona (Barrier – 21) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Peter Snowden
  • Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
  • Career Stats: 11s – 4w – 3p
  • Last Start: 1st at Randwick

Another last start winner but from barrier 21 he’ll need a mountain of luck. No real choice but to go forward, unbeaten on good tracks but can still handle it if it rains.

Bet on Yulalona now at Luxbet

#5 – Equissential (Barrier – 5) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Neville O Saunders
  • Jockey: Phillip Wolfgram
  • Career Stats: 18s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 14th at Doomben

Showed a bit of promise in the Rough Habit but fell away badly in the Grand Prix Stakes. Another which is likely to go forward but there’s better in the field.

Bet on Equissential now at Luxbet

#6 – Hour Of Peril (Barrier – 6) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Glen Colless
  • Career Stats: 16s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 15th at Doomben

Second in the Rough Habit and you thought he was going to be a big player. In the Grand Prix though he ran 2nd last, disappointing and rules him out here.

Bet on Hour Of Peril now at Luxbet

#7 – Diamond Jim (Barrier – 8 ) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: David Payne
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 19s – 3w – 3p
  • Last Start: 5th at Randwick

First run up in Brisbane after finishing fifth behind Yulalona last start. Stepping up in grade and it’s tough to take him against this field.

Bet on Diamond Jim now at Luxbet

#8 – Mr Light Blue (Barrier – 23) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Barry Baldwin
  • Jockey: Chris Munce
  • Career Stats: 13s – 3w – 7p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Doomben

Excellent horse with plenty of heart and great early speed. He’d be one of the main players were it not for the horrible gate. Don’t rule him out completely though, special horse.

Bet on Mr Light Blue now at Luxbet

#9 – Charing Cross (Barrier – 13) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse
  • Jockey: Nash Rawiller
  • Career Stats: 9s – 2w – 4p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Randwick

Has been consistent down south and performed on slow and heavy surfaces. Probably needs some rain to be a hope but even then needs to step it up.

Bet on Charing Cross now at Luxbet

#10 – Single (Barrier – 2) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Craig Carmody
  • Jockey: Dale Spriggs
  • Career Stats: 4s – 2w – 1p
  • Last Start: 9th at Randwick

Struggled on a heavy track in Sydney but won at Rosehill the race previous. On a dry track he could run a place but unlikely to win against this field.

Bet on Single now at Luxbet

#11 – Leading (Barrier – 22) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: John O’Shea
  • Jockey: James McDonald
  • Career Stats: 6s – 3w – 1p
  • Last Start: 13th at Doomben

Was touted as a big gun coming up from Sydney but arrived at Doomben and struggled to finish 13th. Hard to see him turning it around enough to be competitive, especially from 22.

Bet on Leading now at Luxbet

#12 – Oforawesome (Barrier – 19) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Kent
  • Jockey: Brad Rawiller
  • Career Stats: 10s – 3w – 3p
  • Last Start: 7th at Rosehill

Last win came on a heavy 10 and the horse has never even started on a good track. Yet to run the trip either, tough sell for Michael Kent.

Bet on Oforawesome now at Luxbet

#13 – Alma’s Fury (Barrier – 17) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Paul Murray
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Career Stats: 13s – 1w – 4p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Doomben

A better horse than the stats suggest and he’ll battle on down the straight. He’ll go forward from the wide gate and it’ll be a matter of heart form there.

Bet on Alma’s Fury now at Luxbet

#14 – Playaction (Barrier – 20) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: David Peoples
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Career Stats: 17s – 4w – 0p
  • Last Start: 6th at Doomben

Plenty to like about this battler but unfortunately not in this grade. The most honest of three-year-olds but his best work is saved for the Sunshine Coast sand track.

Bet on Playaction now at Luxbet

#15 – Satch (Barrier – 10) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Bruce Hill
  • Jockey: Paul Hammersley
  • Career Stats: 14s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 8th at Doomben

Another horse that will find the going tough and is simply outclassed by the front runners. Did well to make the field and won’t finish last.

Bet on Satch now at Luxbet

#16 – Quarterbar (Barrier – 14) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Chad Ormsby
  • Career Stats: 11s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 1st at Doomben

Ran in mid-week grade to sneak into the field but it was a good win nonetheless getting up by four. Will be sent forward in the race to give him every chance and to avoid trouble.

Bet on Quarterbar now at Luxbet

#17 – Shez Sinsational (Barrier – 7) (54kgs)

  • Trainer: Allan Sharrock
  • Jockey: Opie Bosson
  • Career Stats: 9s – 4w – 3p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Eagle Farm

First of the fillies and not without hope at all after running third in the Oaks. Needs to lift but a good run from barrier seven and she’ll hit the line hard.

Bet on Shez Sinsational now at Luxbet

#18 – Heidilicious (Barrier – 3) (54kgs)

  • Trainer: John Sadler
  • Jockey: Jim Byrne
  • Career Stats: 6s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 5th at Eagle Farm

Start is the key after issues in her last two runs. If she gets it right and can find a spot in the field she’ll run home hard though, plenty rate her as a big hope.

Bet on Heidilicious now at Luxbet
