Peck Muscles into Derby Contention

May 31st, 2011

Peter Snowden is hopeful his Darley team can continue its stellar run at the Brisbane carnival of racing when Peck lines up in the Group 1 Queensland Derby on Saturday June 11.

Peck is currently rated a $10 chance in the Derby with Luxbet, despite two less than impressive outings at his last two starts.

Sydney stayer Shootoff, from the Graeme Rogerson yard, has a firm grip on favouritism for the race after he finished fourth against the open class horses in the Group 1 Doomben Cup.

Peter Snowden identified Peck as a Queensland Derby contender following his third at Sandown in December, which came after an impressive maiden win at Bendigo.

“I thought after his Sandown run when he ran third that he was a horse who wanted ground. I spelled him straight away and picked out the Queensland Derby,” said Snowden.

Following the spell Peck won impressively at Kembla Grange, before Snowden stepped him up in class and distance and sent him to the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury.

The colt finished a credible fifth in the Rowley Mile, which was enough to satisfy Snowden that his charge was ready for a tilt at the Derby.

“I’m really happy with the way he is going. The Rowley mile was a good opportunity to put him in against some good horses.

“He was a little restless in the barriers last start and as the gates opened he reared up and missed the start by five or six lengths. But he managed to make up ground and finished the race off with some good sectionals,” said Snowden.

The track is currently rated as Dead, but there are showers forecast for Derby day.

“He’s very adaptable and can handle any type of surface so the track won’t worry him,” Snowden said.

Snowden also decided against a gear change, despite the fact that Peck’s start cost him any realistic chance of winning at his last start.

“Sometimes when you go to fix a problem you can make another one. But he’s in terrific order and probably the best I’ve seen him,” said Snowden.

Peter Snowden and the Darley team will be chasing their second Group 1 success of the Brisbane carnival, after Beaded won the Doomben 10,000.
