2010 Queensland Derby Nominations

June 8th, 2010

This Saturday the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival comes to a close after an exhilarating month with Queensland’s premier race meeting, the AAMI Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm.

Three prestigious Group 1 races highlight the card, including the leading race for three-year-olds, the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m).

The 2010 Channel Seven Queensland Derby has attracted 34 nominations, including the clear early favourite Kutchinsky. The Tony Noonan-trained Anabaa gelding was super impressive last start when he claimed victory in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben.

The Grand Prix Stakes is one of many popular three-year-olds races held earlier in the carnival that horses use on their way to a run in the Derby, and many of the winners of these events are amongst the Queensland Derby nominations.

Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2020m) winner The Hombre, who also ran a solid second to Kutchinsky in the Grand Prix Stakes, is one such three-year-old. The John Barry-trained Kiwi is currently the $5.50 third favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au for Saturday.

Other winners of the Brisbane winter three-year-old classics nominated for Saturday’s Derby showdown include Michael Moroney’s in-form filly Marheta, who won the Group 3 Doomben Roses (2020m) on May 22 before running a gallant second to roughie Miss Keepsake in last weekend’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).

Marheta is an $11 chance for the Derby at the moment through Ladbrokes.com.au, as is the Bart Cummings-trained Dariana who was the hot Oaks favourite last Saturday before bungling the start and never leaving the barriers.

Cummings also has his Grand Prix Stakes third placegetter Landlord nominated along with promising Savabeel gelding Brightnight.

The marquee race at Saturday’s meeting is the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) where the Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobegotyou is the hot pre race favourite currently paying $2.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Other drawcards include the $500,000 Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) for two-year-olds, the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) and the $250,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
